What is MCP?
A way to connect your AI assistant to Workin, so you can find your next design job in a conversation.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets AI apps use tools and information from other services. With Workin connected, your assistant can search our jobs catalogue and read individual listings when you ask.
You ask. Workin looks.
- You describe the job.Tell your assistant the role, location and kind of company you have in mind.
- Your assistant searches. It uses Workin’s tools to look for matching roles in the catalogue.
- You get a shortlist.Ask it to compare the results, open a listing or give you the employer’s application link.
You can refine the search as you go: “Only studios”, “Try London too”, or “Show the roles with a listed salary”. The assistant can work with the returned listings instead of relying only on what it already knows.
Start with a question.
Use Workin to find five remote product design jobs in Europe. Include the location restrictions and application links.
Find design jobs at studios in London. Show the company, title and any listed salary in a table.
Show me design roles at Koto. Read the details of the two that look most relevant to brand design.
Compare these three roles. Summarize what each listing says about the work, location and experience required. Mark anything it doesn’t specify.
Workin filters cover role or company keywords, city, country, Europe, workplace, studio or company, and whether a salary is listed. “Remote” can still mean a specific country or time zone: check the listing before applying.
What you’ll need.
- Workin Plus, at €7 a month. It includes the full catalogue, personal email alerts and MCP access.
- An AI app that supports remote MCP servers with a custom
Authorizationheader. Cursor is one option; its setup is below. - A private Workin API key. This is the access code your app uses to connect to your membership.
You don’t need to build or run a server. Workin runs it for you. Your AI app may have its own subscription or usage fees.
Connect Workin in Cursor.
Get your Workin key.
Open your account and activate Plus. Under “Bring Workin along”, name a key — for example, “Cursor” — and choose “Create key”. Copy it while it is displayed; you cannot reveal it again later.
Add the connection.
In Cursor, open Customize and find the MCP configuration. For a personal connection available across projects, edit
~/.cursor/mcp.jsonin your home folder.Use the configuration below and replace
YOUR_WORKIN_KEYwith the key you copied. Keep the wordBearerand the space after it. If the file already lists other servers, add theworkinentry inside its existingmcpServersobject.{ "mcpServers": { "workin": { "url": "https://workin.design/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_WORKIN_KEY" } } } }Keep the key in your personal configuration or use your client’s environment-variable support. Don’t put it in a shared project, public chat or screenshot.
Enable the tools.
Save the configuration and enable Workin in Cursor’s MCP controls. If it hasn’t appeared, restart Cursor. The connection should expose two tools:
search_design_jobsandget_design_job.Try your first search.
In an Agent conversation, ask: “Use Workin to find five design jobs.” Approve the tool request if prompted. You should see returned listings or a clear no-matches result. If the assistant answers without using Workin, ask it explicitly to call
search_design_jobs.
Cursor’s interface can change. Its official MCP guide ↗ describes the current configuration options.
Using another AI app?
Look for remote MCP support and the option to send a custom authorization header. Use these connection details:
- Server URL
https://workin.design/mcp- Connection type
- Streamable HTTP
- Header name
Authorization- Header value
Bearer YOUR_WORKIN_KEY
Workin currently uses API keys. An app that only accepts OAuth sign-in for remote servers cannot connect directly to this endpoint. Check compatibility before subscribing specifically for MCP.
What can it do?
search_design_jobs finds matching roles and returns listing links. get_design_job reads an individual role, its available description and application link.
These tools only read jobs. They cannot submit an application, email an employer, change your alerts or manage your billing. Applications happen on the employer’s website; alert and membership settings stay in your Workin account.
Your AI app sends the search terms and filters to Workin and receives job information in return. How the conversation is stored or used depends on that app’s privacy settings.
Plus includes 1,000 tool calls per calendar month, shared across your keys. One chat message can trigger several calls: a search and three detail lookups count as four. The monthly allowance resets on the first day of the month at 00:00 UTC. There is also a limit of 60 requests per minute.
You can have up to three active keys. Each expires after 90 days; create a replacement and update your app when needed. Revoke a key in your account whenever you want to disconnect it. MCP access requires an active Plus membership.
If something doesn’t connect.
“Invalid or expired API key” / 401
Check that the full key is present after Bearer , with one space between them. Expired or revoked keys need to be replaced in both your account and your AI app.
“Workin Plus membership required” / 403
Check your membership in your account. The key needs to belong to an account with active Plus access. For an “Invalid origin” error, check the app’s remote MCP support or contact us.
“Monthly limit reached” or “Too many requests” / 429
Check your tool usage in your account. A monthly limit resets next month; a request-rate limit needs a short pause before trying again.
The server URL shows an error in my browser / 405
The /mcp address is for your AI app, not a page to open in a browser. Add it as a remote MCP connection with the authorization header.
Connected, but no jobs appear
Confirm the assistant actually used a Workin tool. Then try fewer filters or a broader location. A working connection can return no matches, and remote roles may have geographic restrictions.
Still stuck? Get in touch ↗ with your app name and the error message. Leave your API key out of the message.
